The shorthand verdict (review to come Thursday): A for effort, C for how it all hangs together.
What Tboy liked:
- that somebody has the nerve to do a nearly 3-hour tragedy by a Nobel Prize-winning author about a Yoruba chieftain
- that the tech is right stylish
- that some of the performances are really fine
- that director John Vreeke seems to get that the play's finger points as much or more toward the chieftain's self-betrayal as toward the colonials' clueless meddling
- that the second act gets satisfyingly Greek, inexorability-wise
What he didn't so much:
- that nowhere in Act 1 does the chieftain's tragic flaw make itself known
- that said Act 1 feels pretty shapeless
- that the lead actor doesn't quite have the gravitas or the feel for language that the part demands
