Marsha - A single parent of 7 adorable cats has been going to the theater since her Mamaw took her to see a community theater production of Pipin at the Methadone Treatment and Senior Center in Paterson. Currently working at the Year Round Christmas Store in the Paramus Mall, she makes it into the City every week or two to catch either Beauty and the Beast or Fiddler. Among her all time favorites are Miss Siagon, A Chorus Line (the revival not the original because she was too young to have seen it because of the smut talk) and anything with Martin Short.

Oh come on now, bridge and tunnelers are allowed to have their opinions as well. And these ARE the people seeing theater - certain kinds of theater at least - so why shouldn't they be able to give voice to their thoughts? In this day and age of internet and blogging and myspace everyone else can voice their opinion so what's one more? I think it's kind of a smart idea, actually. Totally dorky and vaguely repulsive, but not stupid.

And this is not instead of actual critics, right? But in addition to, yes?

Or maybe it is instead of. But who really goes to Broadway.com for insightful reviews and criticism? By my understanding they are just one more posting/chat site that mostly posts press releases and occasionally posts reviews.

You all are friggin' elitists in this town, doing Brecht and Beckett and plays by obscure German playwrights who look like Elvis Costello...

Which reminds me of one of my favorite lines from Get Your War On last night:

"If "elitist" just means "not the dumbest motherfucker in the room", I'll be an elitist!"

Loved them. Loved the show. So much fun. So simultaneously depressing.

So does anyone remember the line where one of the actresses is on the phone speaking with "history" personified about whether our leaders will ultimately be held accountable? Or something like that?

That was my favoriteist favorite line.

Let us be clear here. I was not commenting on whether these women should be reviewing theater or not. I am simply fascinated by the format of their bios.

The bios are genuine genius, aren't they? You figure the PR folk bothered to actually interview them? Or just assign favorite shows at random? I think 'Zilla's "Marsha" profile is a riot, if only because it points out how difficult it is to tell the real thing from a parody.

And from what I've heard it wasn't very good.

But all kidding aside, I'm not saying pander to any particular audience or write plays based on the desires of the masses - I'm just saying, if people love WICKED let them love WICKED. Some of the people who are turned on to live theater by showy uber-accessible material will eventually look deeper into the nooks and crannies of the form and try out something darker, more interesting, more complex. That's how audiences are indoctrinated. I bet Clark, in a few years, will have surpassed all of us in the sophistication of his tastes. And maybe I'm just sensitive because fifteen years ago I could recite every lyric to Les Miz and Phantom and A Chorus Line. But I bet there are others out there who would sheepishly admit the same.

Or maybe not.

My point is – live theater is live theater and we are all better off if people continue to be enthusiastic about the fact that it exists.

Yes, Ken Mandlebaum is no longer with Broadway.com. I have been an avid reader of his literate investigations of musical theatre since his books helped me through grad school. As soon as I noticed his absence, I dropped him an email, to which he responded immediately and with class. He pointed no fingers at anyone, so who knows if he left on his own or was forced out. But the coincidence of his final posting on Broadway.com and John Simon's first posting appearing in the same week was not lost on me...
